چکیده

Feeding pets raw meat-based diets (RMBDs) is becoming increasingly popular but comes with a risk of pathogenic bacteria, including Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC). In humans, STEC may cause gastrointestinal illnesses, diarrhea, hemorrhagic colitis (HC), and the hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). The aim this study was to evaluate commercially available RMBDs regard occurrence STEC. Of 59 RMBD samples, 59% tested positive by real-time PCR for presence toxin genes stx1 and/or stx2. STECs were recovered from 41% strains subjected serotyping virulence gene profiling, using whole genome sequencing (WGS)-based methods. 28 strains, 29% carried stx2a or stx2d, which are linked high potential. Twenty different serotypes identified, O26:H11, O91:H10, O91:H14, O145:H28, O146:H21, O146:H28, within most common non-O157 serogroups associated human STEC-related illnesses worldwide. Considering low infectious dose potential severity disease manifestations, in poses an important health persons handling pet food close contact fed on RMBDs, concern field public health.

Prevalence of Multidrug Resistant Shiga Toxin-Producing Escherichia coli in Cattle Meat and Its Contact Surfaces

Background: Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are group of E. coli causing bloody diarrhea. The goal of this survey was to determine the prevalence of multidrug resistant shiga toxin-producing E. coli in cattle meat and its contact surfaces. Methods: Swab samples (n=120) were randomly collected from meat and contact surface of butchery shops in Sharkia province, Egypt. Prevalence o...

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) cause hemorrhagic colitis (HC) and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) in humans. Outbreaks are linked to bovine food sources. STEC O157:H7 has been responsible for the most severe outbreaks worldwide. However, non-O157 serotypes have emerged as important enteric pathogens in several countries. The main virulence factor of STEC is the production of Shig...

Detection of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) in faeces of healthy calves in Mashhad, Iran

The aim of this study was to identify virulent Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) strains isolated from faecal samples of 100 clinically healthy calves. In the present study, a total of 100 Escherichia coli (E. coli) isolates from clinically healthy calves belonging to 6 different farms located in Khorasan Razavi province, Iran, were examined for presence of virulence genes character...
